What is an abdominal muscle strain?
A person with an abdominal muscle strain has stretched or torn one of the abdominal muscles, usually due to an injury. Muscle strains occur when the muscle is stretched too far: the muscle fibers tear. A complete tear through the muscle is called a muscle rupture.
What are the symptoms of an abdominal muscle strain?
Symptoms of an abdominal muscle strain include abdominal pain that worsens with abdominal muscle contraction and abdominal tenderness. There may be mild swelling or bruising overlying the injured muscle.

Treatment for an abdominal muscle strain includes rest and cold compresses to the injury. Acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain control.
