The evaluation of nosebleed begins with a history and physical examination.

Physical findings in someone with severe nosebleeds may include:

• Easy bleeding
• Bleeding gums
• Excessive bruising
• Blood in the stool:
• Black stool
• Rectal bleeding
• Red stools
• Pale skin
• Rash:
• Rash looks like broken blood vessels under the skin surface

In most cases, no tests are necessary to evaluate a nosebleed. Tests may be necessary to evaluate repeated nosebleeds or excessive bleeding.

Tests that may be used to evaluate repeated nosebleeds may include:

• Bleeding time
• Complete blood count
• Fibrinogen level
• Fibrin split products
• Hageman factor assay
• Factor 5 level
• Factor 7 level
• Factor 8 level
• Factor 10 level
• INR
• Partial thromboplastin time (PTT)
• Platelet count
• Protime (PT)
• Platelet count
