What is itching?
A person with itching has irritation of the skin that results in the urge to scratch the skin. Scratching can injure the skin surface, allowing bacteria to enter the tissue beneath the surface. The growing bacteria can result in a skin infection, called impetigo.

What are the symptoms of itching?
Symptoms that can occur with itching include rash, dry skin, jaundice, and skin lesions. Serious symptoms that may occur with itching include severe hives, fainting, breathing difficulty, wheezing, mouth or tongue swelling, and facial swelling.

How does the doctor treat itching?
Treatment for itching includes antihistamines, topical corticosteroids, and oral corticosteroids.
