Common hip injuries include hip contusion, hip strain, hip sprain, and hip fracture. The most common cause of hip injury is a fall.

What are the symptoms of a hip injury?
Symptoms of a hip injury depend on the severity of the injury. Symptoms of a hip fracture include sudden severe hip pain that worsens with movement of the hip. Additional symptoms of hip injury may include bruising over the hip, hip swelling, hip tenderness, knee pain, difficulty walking, limping, inability to stand, leg weakness, and leg numbness.

How does the doctor treat a hip injury?
Treatment for a hip injury includes rest, elevation of the leg, cold compresses and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain. Treatment for a hip fracture includes surgery to repair the hip. In some cases, treatment for a hip fracture may require a hip joint replacement. Additional treatment may include narcotic pain medications, physical therapy, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for pain.
