Fever Types
Fever pattern can be described as:
  • Sustained fever:
    • A consistently elevated body temperature
  • Episodic fever:
    • A body temperature that cycles up and down
  • Recurrent fever:
    • Fever returns from time to time with no particular pattern
Fever grade can be described as:
  • Low-grade fever:
    • Temperature less than 101 degrees F (38.3 C)
  • High-grade fever:
    • Temperature over 104 degrees F (40 C)
The following adults should be evaluated by a physician:
  • An adult with a fever over 102.9 degrees F (39.4 C) Videos
  • An adult over 65 years old with a fever over 101.9 degrees F (38.8 C) Videos
  • An adult with a fever that lasts longer than 3 days
The following children require an evaluation by a physician:
  • A child less than 2 months old, who has a fever over 100.4 degrees F (38 C)
  • A child less than 2 years old, who has a fever over 101.9 degrees F (38.8 C)
  • A child less than 2 years old, who has a fever longer than 1 day
  • A child with a fever over 102.9 degrees F (39.4 C) Videos

The following infants require an evaluation by a physician:
  • An infant less than 2 months old, who has a fever over 100.4 degrees F (38 C)
