- Anal sex
- Health care workers who are stuck by a needle contaminated by HIV
- Homosexual male
- Intravenous drug use
- Multiple sex partners
- Prostitution
- Unprotected sex
- A pregnant woman who is infected with HIV:
- The infected woman has a 1 in 3 chance of passing the infection to the infant.
- Breastfeeding caries a very small risk for infection in the infant.
